Animal suppliers have a responsibility beyond selling livestock. Professional advice protects clients, animals, and business reputation. Selfish selling can create avoidable losses when inexperienced farmers make decisions. Wise guidance matters.
Ruminant production follows seasons. In southwestern and eastern Nigeria, rainy periods can create serious challenges for newly introduced goats, especially Sokoto Red, Sahel, and West African Dwarf breeds. Timing matters.
Acclimatized animals are livestock stabilized in their new environment and accustomed to available feeds. Proper acclimatization requires expertise, patience, and careful management, sometimes lasting a month or longer. Preparation matters.
During rainy seasons, farmers should consider sheep or cattle where conditions are suitable, while avoiding unnecessary stocking of vulnerable small ruminants. One client ignored advice and experienced losses. Listen early.
My message is simple: suppliers should prioritize professional guidance over profit. Clients should seek expert advice before purchasing animals, because prevention costs less than rescuing deteriorating livestock. Knowledge saves money.
