STOP RESTRICTING WATER: RESEARCH CAN CHANGE HOW WE MANAGE RUMINANT DIARRHOEA

August 10, 2026

Diarrhoea can rapidly weaken ruminants through fluid and electrolyte losses, yet some farmers still restrict water. Good management should protect hydration while addressing underlying causes. Healthy hydration supports recovery.

Water restriction may worsen dehydration, weight loss, weakness, and low market value. Sick animals need fluids and electrolytes, especially during prolonged diarrhoeal episodes or recovery. Protect hydration.

Diarrhoea has many causes, including infections, parasites, nutrition, toxins, and management errors. Therefore, treatment should begin with proper assessment rather than assumptions about moisture alone. Find the cause.

Research and continuous learning help farmers discover better approaches. Effective treatment depends on identifying causes, supporting hydration, correcting nutrition, and using veterinary interventions when indicated. Research improves practice.

My commitment to research reminds me that agricultural knowledge must keep evolving. What worked yesterday may require improvement today as evidence, technology, and experience develop. Keep learning.

Never stop learning, questioning, researching, and improving your farm practices. Good farmers respect experience but remain open to better knowledge that protects animals and profitability. Knowledge drives progress.
