Brood and sale broilers sound attractive to buyers, but production economics tell another story. Feed costs can quickly make four-week production financially difficult today. Know the economics.
As a farmer since 2018, I have rarely considered keeping broilers four weeks solely for brood and sale because feed expenses can consume expected margins. Profit matters.
A buyer once questioned whether my broilers were four weeks old. When feed costs reached twenty-two thousand naira per bag, the economics became clear. Do the calculations.
If someone claims four-week broilers are cheaply available for brood and sale, examine the figures. Feed, medication, lighting, labour, mortality, and management cost money. Question unrealistic claims.
Many farmers therefore sell earlier, often around three weeks, depending on market conditions and production costs. Honest communication helps buyers understand what they are purchasing. Transparency builds trust.
Ultimately, profitable poultry farming requires realistic pricing, transparent information, and management rather than pleasing expectations. May we choose truth, wisdom, and sustainable farming practices always. Sustainable farming wins.
