Travelling abroad often reshapes perspectives by exposing realities beyond familiar traditions. Sometimes, valuable lessons emerge from unexpected experiences rather than classroom instruction. Experience broadens understanding.
Arriving at Ulster University, I wore corporate attire for my first presentation, following previous training. Surprisingly, classmates dressed casually and presented confidently without restrictions. Context matters greatly.
Having studied at FUNAAB and the University of Ibadan, formal presentation dressing was strongly emphasised. The contrasting academic culture challenged my long-held expectations. Learning never ends.
Similar experiences during interviews revealed candidates wearing hoodies, sweatshirts, and jackets without disadvantages. Professional competence appeared valued above strict appearance alone. Substance outweighs appearance.
These experiences taught me that unnecessary rigidity can complicate simple processes. Progress comes through adapting wisely while preserving excellence, professionalism, and respect. Flexibility encourages growth.
